5 Things You Actually Need to Start Digital Marketing

When I first started looking into digital marketing, I honestly thought I needed so much more than I actually did.

I thought I needed a perfect website, expensive equipment, thousands of followers, a proper office setup, and some huge business idea before I could even begin.

But over time, I realised that a lot of people making money online started much simpler than that.

So if you’ve been overthinking digital marketing or putting it off because it all feels overwhelming, these are the five things I genuinely think are enough to get started.

1. A device - Phone or laptop With Internet

This sounds obvious, but I think a lot of people underestimate how much you can actually do from your phone now.

You can learn new skills, watch tutorials, design products in Canva, create videos, upload Pinterest pins, answer customer messages, and even run an entire digital product business from your phone.

Would a laptop make some things easier eventually? Of course.

But you do not need a perfect setup to begin learning digital marketing. A lot of people are quietly building side hustles during lunch breaks, after work, or while sitting in bed at night using the phone they already have.

2. A product or service to promote

You actually need a product to sell and digital products and the smartest choice.

Things like ebooks, planners, checklists, templates, printable art, or guides are popular because there is no packing, shipping, or storing inventory in your house.

And honestly, I think starting with done-for-you digital products or editable templates can make the learning process feel much less overwhelming for beginners.

Sometimes people spend months trying to create the “perfect” product instead of actually learning how to market and sell something. And even after that...crickets...no sales.

The important thing in the beginning is learning how online selling works before going on to create your own product.

3. A platform to share your content - Social Media Account

At some point, people need a way to discover you.

That does not mean you need to become a full-time influencer overnight or suddenly start filming your entire life.

A simple TikTok page, Pinterest account, Instagram page, or even faceless content account is enough to begin sharing helpful content and learning what people are interested in.

Some people grow quickly. Some people grow slowly.

But consistency teaches you so much about digital marketing in real time. You'll learn what works and what doesn't.

For example, I created two pins for the same blog post on Pinterest. One performed well and the other didn't. What i learned? small changes in font and the day of week can make a big difference. I would never have known this without trying.

4. A Place to Sell Your Products

One thing that stops a lot of beginners is thinking they need a complicated website before they can sell anything.

You really do not. For creators just starting out and not ready to commit to a platform with a monthly subscription, I recommend linktree - it is one of the easiest ways to sell on social media and here is a quick tutorial.

You can upload digital products, create a simple storefront, and share the link in your bio.

That means you can focus more on learning content creation and marketing instead of getting stuck trying to build the “perfect” website first.

5. The Right Mindset

I honestly think this is the biggest one.

Digital marketing can look very easy online when you only see people posting their income screenshots or viral videos. But behind most successful accounts is usually a lot of learning, testing, consistency, and patience.

Sometimes your content will flop.Sometimes your product will not sell immediately.Sometimes you will feel like everyone else understands things faster than you do.

That is normal.

The people who eventually succeed are usually the ones who keep learning anyway.

You do not need to know everything before you begin. You just need to be willing to start messy, improve over time, and stay consistent long enough to learn what actually works for you.

Final thoughts - Digital marketing

Starting digital marketing can feel overwhelming at first because it seems like everyone online already knows exactly what they are doing.

But honestly, most people start with very little experience.

They learn by creating content, testing ideas, watching what works, and improving over time.

You do not need the fanciest equipment, thousands of followers, or expensive courses to begin. A few simple tools, consistency, and a willingness to keep learning are honestly enough to get started.

And the best part is that digital marketing is a skill that can keep opening doors over time. Whether you want to grow a blog, build a faceless content page, promote affiliate products, sell digital products, or eventually work for yourself, these are skills that can genuinely change your income long term.

The important thing is not waiting until everything feels perfect.

It is simply starting.
